právě tehdy možná došlo k chybě vedoucí k tragédii (1937)

In 1937, a four-engine ANT-25, specially adapted to fly over the Arctic, took off from Moscow for an intercontinental flight to Alaska with a crew of six and an experienced pilot S. G. Levanevsky in command. They were in constant contact with Moscow through radio dispatches, crossed the North Pole and set course for Alaska. Then they reported a defect on one engine and the contact was cut off. The world feared the worst, next to Russians, Americans and Canadians were engaged in extensive search missions. Yet the tragedy has never been explained.

Several hypotheses turned up: „The Alaska variant“ - according to a testimony made by Eskymos, Levanevsky force-landed on a floe. Then he took off again but crashed close to Jones Islands.

According to “The Siberian variant”, a navigation error was caused by asymmetric pull of engines after crossing the Pole and it was necessary to descend to the clouds level. The crew had no idea that the plane made 80 degree turn and actually was returning. Witnesses claim that a plane crashed into the Siberian lake Seben-Kjuel and it could not be any other. There were no planes operating in that area none was missing. Several crewmembers are said to have reached the shore where they gradually perished. The skeleton remains were found and a magnetometer registers an anomaly at the bot-tom of this deep lake.

There is also “the Goebels’ variant”: Levanevsky had force-landed on a floe but was rescued by the German submarine. Later, he offered his services to the Nazi Germany and participated in an air raid on Moscow. A Heinkel 111 bomber with the pilot named Hans Levanevsky was actually shot down…
